Fishing was, and is an important source of food for Native people. In the Northeast, fish weirs were built using sticks, stones and nets. They diverted fish into a variety of traps used to harvest specific species of fish. Much like a lobster trap, fish traps are often designed so once they swim into the trap, it is difficult for them to escape.
